Technical Author

  • ClinPhone is the number one provider of clinical-trial management services to the world’s pharmaceutical companies.
  • Generally, the bulk of my work is documenting software, ranging from internal technical programming reference manuals to external client user guides.
  • The authoring position at ClinPhone was a new role, so it was necessary to design and develop a range of authoring solutions to meet the company’s diverse documentation needs, whilst maintaining a consistent look and feel.
  • Working alongside another author, my day-to-day projects include producing and maintaining user guides, reference manuals, webhelp and context-sensitive help systems.
  • The majority of my internal guides are written for the Operations Department.
  • I also regularly cooperate with them on a consultancy level; helping them to write and publish their standards and procedures.
  • I also liase with the Training Department to produce online CBT courses on the `Topclass’ system.
  • I have also created a suite of animated sales-demo movies for the Business Development team.
  • These are generally used at trade shows to showcase our products and services.
  • I have recently been called on to improve the quality of the internal requirement and technical specification documentation used by the Development Department.
  • To facilitate this role, I have been trained in UML and OO program design.

Meggitt Petroleum Systems

Technical Author

  • Now trading as VBi Retail Solutions Ltd, Meggitt Petroleum Systems produced EPOS retail systems and back-office stock control and accounts software, specialised for use in petrol forecourts.
  • My duties included preparing and writing functional specification documents for new software modules for use by software developers, and acting as chairman in document review meetings held with Development, Testing and Support department management.
  • I performed a very customer-focussed role, including the production of end-user customer manuals, internal technical procedures and training literature.
  • As part of my role, I also prepared and presented internal and external training courses.
