Nurse Anesthetist
- I am a basic treatment room Practice Nurse, currently working 15hrs a week. I love this position, as I never know what my day will entail.
- My current skills include; Ear Irrigation, Single and double layer bandaging of leg ulcers, Wound Care, Basic Counseling, INR’s, BP’s, Packing of wounds, Suture removal, Administering Depos, B12s, HPVs, Tetanus, ECGs, Dietary advice, Chlamydia screening, dealing with urine samples, assessment of patients in a holistic manner, and contraceptive advice.
- These are just a few things that I do in my daily position, as you will appreciate there are many more things that crop up during the course of the day, that you learn to deal with efficiently and effectively.
- Also part of my role is knowing when to seek help from a more senior member of the nursing team or GP.
- At this current practice I am in charge of doing the notice boards on a regular basis.
- I feel this is important as it keeps the patients up to date with important information.
- To date the notice boards that I have done include, information on Swine Flu, Alcohol units over Christmas, and most recent BMI’s and nutrition advice.

- Going into patients own homes, Helping with daily activities, which could be: ADLs, Medication, Supporting Mobility, Making Meals, Advising Family on progress and anything I think that could help the patient, Reporting to Gardiners any concerns, Making sure myself and other staff comply to all NMC regulations, and ensuring that proper Infection control is adhered too, Monetary matters, and anything else that they may need you to assist with.
- Working out in the community, in Patients own homes is very different to the autonomy of working on the hospital wards.
- At all times you must remember you are in the patients own home, and all care issues must be adhered to with the same respect, dignity, and holistic approach at all times.
- You must also remember that the patient still has the same amount of choice in the care they receive, if not more so as they are in their own home.

Orthopaedic Nurse
- Working on a busy Orthopaedic Surgical Ward, I dealt with patients in a holistic manner and helped them with Activities of daily living (ADLs), Monitored post op patients, Administered medication within the Nursing and Midwifery Code of conduct (NMC)
- I was responsible for liaising with members of the family and the multi disciplinary team, Monitored patients well being, and implemented the patients care programme in line with the trusts protocol.
- I have clear and concise verbal and written communication skills, I completed a secondment in surgical site surveillance where I monitored all post op knee wounds, and looked for signs of infection.
- I took dressings and drains out, and re-dressed wounds accordingly, Inputted data, which got sent to the Health protection agency.
At the end of the surveillance period the data that I collected was published and our infection rate compared against other hospitals.
- In addition to the surveillance I also did an autologus blood audit, and ran the Surgical Admissions Unit where I admitted patients ready for surgery.
- I tried to lessen the patient’s and their visitor’s anxieties and apprehension by explaining things to them accurately and in lay terms.
- I worked alongside Senior House Officers, Anesthetists, Registrars, and Consultants, Escorted patients to theatre, and handed over accurate information to ward staff.
