Judicial Extern

  • I was an extern for Senior Judge J. Fitzgerald, III of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania, an intermediate appellate court.
  • Judge Fitzgerald is a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. During my externship I drafted judicial opinions to be circulated to other appellate judges, and wrote bench memoranda for civil and criminal appeals for reference during oral argument sessions.
  • I reviewed and edited draft opinions by other judges on the appellate panel and would recommend a vote to the Justice.
  • I also reviewed and recommended which cases the Justice should accept for appeal. The judicial externship honed my legal writing and research skills, and my ability to craft a well-reasoned, concise legal document.

Legal Internship (Paid) – Trademark Office

  • During my legal internship I wrote various legal documents for attorneys within the Trademark Office.
  • I wrote an appeal brief for an ex parte case before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB).
  • I wrote a Final Office Action, which argued that the registration of various applied-for trademarks should be refused on the basis of a likelihood of confusion with an existing.
  • I wrote various research reports for examining attorneys on issues concerning likelihood of confusion, descriptiveness, geographic significance, and acquired distinctiveness.
  • I attended multiple TTAB hearings as well. The internship provided an extensive legal education of U.S. trademark law in an environment in which I was able to use and develop my legal research and writing skills.
